fernando-alonso.jpg

The Spaniard race car driver Fernando Alonso has just presented a  few recommendations to improve road safety, in an initiative promoted by Cajastur.

Here is a list of steps to follow according to Formula 1 world champion:

    1. Use belts on all seats
2. Wear your helmet and tighten it properly
3. Adjust your driving to the conditions of the track
4. Keep in mind the state of the car and take it in for maintenance before a trip
5. If you are tired or sleepy , stop for a while and rest
                                                                                                                                                                                                                6. Forget talking on the cellphone while driving
7. At the wheel, not a drop of alcohol
8. Always keep a safe distance with other vehicles
9. Respect speed limits
10. A reckless attitude can cost lives

Alonso also made statements regarding road safety: “If children see me succeed and we achieve no accidents until 2050 , I am satisfied.  A round of applause for the Spanish champion .

Ndrive G400, a GPS with a built in alcoholmeter

ndriveg400.jpg
Ndrive presents an interesting GPS navigating system with a built in alcoholmeter. This curious Ndrive G400,as well as being very useful, is also a low cost navegator, being that its price is around 200 euros.

The alcoholmeter incorporated is very graphic, as you cas see by the picture. The gadget will be Sharp and will show on the screen if we are in conditions to drive or not. This way, it will indicate the level of alcohol in the air and shows a graph where we could see out state.

Other main features include a 3.5 inch screen and multimedia functions, which allow music reproduction, video, photos and some games. Mind you, its price is reduced because it only incorporates a map of one country.

The new cars will have daytime lights in 2011

coches-en-la-noche.jpg

A few months ago we talked about the initiative by the DGT to turn car lights on in the morning. And now the European Union is uniting to this initiative.

According to the Road Safety British minister, Jim Fitzpatrick, the EU will not obligate current vehicles to keep the head lights on during the day, but they do claim that all cars that are sold from 2011 have running day light.

This European initiative will affect all 2011 cars and hybrid vehicles and will be a requirement by mid-2012 for trucks and buses.

MirrorPilot the GPS navigator that can be seen in the rear-view mirror

mirror-pilot.jpg

The other day we talked about a GPS that is installed in the windshield. Today we bring you a system that is monitorized by the rear-view mirror. It is called MirrorPilot, a navigator that displays the GPS sytem in the rearview mirror of the car. It´s a brilliant system, because it does not deviate your eyes from the road when looking at it.

The project will be presented to the public at the next Cebit fair in Germany. So far, we can only say that the MirrorPilot will cost about 700 euros and that the space that the screen occupies in the rear-view mirror is about 2.2 inches.

This gadget will be available only Europe since, since it will have a map of the entire continent, views of 2 and 3 dimensions, and voice controls and traffic reports.

Continental creates a tire that repairs itself

rueda-que-se-autorepara.jpg

Tires are, without a doubt, one of the most important elements of our vehicle, mainly because they are the only ones who are in direct contact with the road. That is why we welcome all new initiatives to improve road safety.

In this sense, Continental assures that this summer it will present for sale its ContiSeal model, a tire which has a viscous and sticky substance that slows down air escape in the event of a puncture, which allows us to continue to run at the same speed.

Of course, we will have to remove the object that caused the puncture as soon as we can. Either way the tire will re fill itself as long as the puncture is less than 5 mm in diameter.

The DGT website offers updates on roads, cameras and incidences

mapa-dgt.jpg

Before departing on a trip it is essential to consult the DGT website. Years back it was very common to call the road information line to be informed, but nowadays with all the new technologies, everything is much more simpler for the traveler.

In the first place, we have a series of traffic cameras , in which we can obserb in real time the state of the roads, however, most of the cameras are in and around Madrid. Hopefully the DGT will resolve this issue.

Secondly, but not least, we can use the interactive map of road incidents. With this tool we are able to find weather, construction or obstruction on all roads in the country.

The interactive map also allows you to calculate the time that will take you to arrive between two points, or register in the web to obtain customized reports, such as recurrent itineraries such as from our home to our place of work.

Recommendations for the next few days, the  listing of fixed radars, specific information such as routes of hazardous materials or a list of black spots are some of the many utilities the the DGT web offers. Very recommended for travelers.
